College Football and Passion

Just a few days until college football starts! I can’t wait! They say that The Florida State University might surprise a few people this year. We can only hope. I don’t much care for pro football. They get paid big bucks, and most of them act like spoiled brats. At the college level, they play for the love of the game. You see passion in the college athletes. They sacrifice time, energy, and sometimes their bodies to win. I wish that every person in the church would have the passion of the college athlete. If we did, we would see a lot more victories for the Father and satan would be defeated.

Nip it; Nip it in the Bud

Splash the Wonder Dog was headed out the front door the other night and was greeted by four deer that were about 10 feet from our door. They were in her space. They were snacking on some of the flowers in our flower bed. Needless to say, the Wonder Dog quickly dispatched those deer. As she came back into the house, she quoted Barney Fife and said she nipped it, nipped it the bud. Sometimes, I need to be like Splash and deal quickly with those things that are gnawing at me. It might be a bad attitude, a thought, or even a sin. If I let them continue to eat at me, the things of beauty will soon be gone.

The Perfect Storm

In the movie The Perfect Storm, there is the simultaneous occurrence of weather events which produces a monster storm. This is rare and powerful occurrence. The individual weather phenomena are far less powerful; but when they combine at the right time, it is fierce. I believe we are in a perfect storm event at Northridge. God has brought together a number of things like new location, volunteers, staff, facilities, outreach, and many other aspects at just the right time. We are getting a front row seat to see God work in a powerful way to reach Baldwin and surrounding counties. Each individual thing that is happening is good; but when God brings these together at the right time, you see a mighty work of our Father. This doesn't happen everyday. Beg the Father to keep blessing!

I read about this in a leadership book not too long ago. It is a popular thing to do or talk about doing. I have decided that maybe I need a “not to do list”. As you can see from the following Scriptures, God has already started this list.
· Job 37:14 “Listen to this, Job; stop and consider God’s wonders.”
· Isaiah 1:16 “Stop doing wrong.”
· John 5:14 “Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.”
· Romans 14:13 “Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another.”
· 1 Corinthians 14:20 “Brothers, stop thinking like children.”
Here are few other things that I thought needed to be on my list.
· Stop focusing only on what needs to be tweaked and take time to celebrate the victories.
· Stop believing I can eat what I want and lose weight.
· Stop thinking my way is best and learn from others.
· Stop thinking people who are not with me are against me.
· Stop believing I have to do it all.

Let's Go For A Walk

Splash the Wonder Dog loves to go on walks. If you mention walk or leash, she goes ballistic. If she sees us changing into walking clothes, she begins to bounce off the walls. She just wants to get out and explore the neighborhood. She enjoys her time with her family. I got to thinking when the Father says to me let’s spend some time together, do I get as excited as Splash the Wonder dog. Splash will even bring her leash in anticipation of our time together. When Christ calls, do I show up with my Bible and journal ready to listen. I hope I am as excited about walking with my Master as Splash is.

I Don't Go To Church; I Am The Church!

I loved the message on a t-shirt that I recently saw. It said, “I don’t go to church; I am the church.” That is the type of thinking that it will take to win the world. Reggie McNeal said it this way, “The shift from “doing” church at the clubhouse to “being” church in the world is a paradigm shift that has apparently eluded many church leaders.” I heard someone say it is time for the church to get out of the barn and into the field. They went on to say we have stood at the barn door and invited the crops in for too long. Jesus said in Mark 1:17 that if you are following Him, you are fishing for men.

The Red Devil Behind the Pearly Gates

“Your tongue is the red devil behind the pearly gates.” Think about that statement for a few minutes. James says it this way, “Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.” (James 3:5-6)

One of my favorite pastimes is complaining. I am good at it. Let’s be honest. When you complain, you unleash that red devil. The people of Israel were world class whiners. Listen to what to what Paul says about them, “And do not grumble, as some of them did — and were killed by the destroying angel.” (1 Corinthians 10:10) We probably all need to find a way to shut the gates and keep that little red devil locked away. We might want to put our tongues on an Ephesians 4:29 training program – “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
